Most people are raped by strangers
During most years, only 17% of rapes are committed by strangers. The rest are committed by friends, dates, family members, coworkers or even husbands.
55% of rapes where the rapist is a stranger get reported to the police, but only 19% of other rapes get reported at all. Only 2% of rapes were reported when the rapist was a date or a family friend.
This means that 83% of the times that a rape occurs, the rapist knew that person, maybe even laughed with her, maybe bought her dinner, maybe saw a movie, maybe talked to her on the phone, maybe thought she was flirting, maybe thought she wanted to…
